The Accidental Teacher
When I moved to Taiwan, I hadn't planned on becoming an English teacher, at least not right away. My hope was to spend at least the first couple of years studying Chinese full-time and then seek employment in travel management, which was my primary career in the US, or in fitness training, which was what I took up when I went through my mid-life crisis.
After arriving in Taiwan, however, I faced several different realities that conspired to guiding me into teaching English. First, there is an enormous demand for native English speaking teachers for primary and secondary schools, cram schools and businesses. Within just a couple months, I had received several different job offers resulting in 4 part-time jobs. Second, learning Chinese turned out to be much more difficult than I had anticipated, which lead to the third reality; my Chinese would never be good enough to work effectively in the travel or fitness industries. After some serious consideration, I decided that my own language learning experience made me a good fit for English teaching, so I took the plunge and started teaching full-time.

It was during this time that I renewed my passion for languages and found that I also enjoyed helping others learn English. Moreover, I learned that in the capacity of a native English speaking teacher, I also provided students an opportunity to learn more about US culture and show that they don't only learn English to take tests but to communicate with people. |

Taipei Language Institute
TLI is where I studied Chinese for 6 months. They offer group and individual courses in many languages and have contracts with several schools and businesses to provide native English speaking teachers for on-site classes. |

Chulin Junior/Senior High School
Chulin is one of the top private schools in Taipei county. I taught juniors, seniors and vocational students here for 4 years, by far my favorite teaching assignment from TLI. | |

TsaiHsing also contracts with TLI for native English speaking teachers for an evening program for their junior and senior high students. |
